A settlement that keeps Sweet Briar College open has been reached just two days before a scheduled three-day trial on a motion to stop the closure. Late in the day on Saturday, the Richmond Times Dispatch reported the deal. The agreement can only be considered a victory for those opposed to the closure, including the students represented by Kevin Mottley of The Mottley Law Firm. It requires the removal and replacement of the current board and president and the installation of new fiduciaries committed to turning the longstanding Virginia school around. The settlement appears that it will bring to a close one of the most bizarre and fascinating political/legal stories of the year. The case was certainly one of the most interesting trust law cases in Virginia history.
